Endowed funds by the Trustees of the Lou Hyndman Campaign Trust Fund on behalf of the Edmonton Glenora Progressive Conservative Association The Award was established in 1986 in recognition of Lou Hyndman's public service to the Province ('56 BA, '59 LLB, `99 LLD) First elected to the Alberta Legislature at the age of 32 for Edmonton Glenora in 1967, he sat in Opposition In 1971, his party won a majority, and he was appointed Government House Leader and Minister of Education He went on to hold the offices of Minister of Federal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Provincial Treasurer until 1986 when he retired from political life and returned to practicing law His career in elected public service started at the University of Alberta as President of the Students¿ Union in 1959 He returned to the University in a voluntary appointed role as Chancellor from 1994 to 1998 As Chancellor, Mr Hyndman encouraged students to be well-rounded and engaged in their studies and extracurricular activities, reflecting his own commitment to making the world a better place His exemplary commitment to public and community service led to his appointment in 1993 as Officer of the Order of Canada
